20 July 1976: Joseph Rochefort, who led Station HYPO in WWII, died on this date.

Station HYPO was the U.S. Navy’s signals monitoring and cryptographic intelligence unit at Pearl Harbor, and was responsible for breaking the Japanese navy’s code before the Battle of Midway.
