1955: Prototype U-2 Flight
4 August 1955: A prototype U-2 made its first planned flight with Lockheed test pilot Tony LeVier.
The U stood for "Utility" and the prototype never had a serial number. It was referred to as Article 341. The U-2 gave us eyes to see inside the Iron Box. It instantly became a major source of our intelligence about the Soviet Union. It constituted nothing less than a revolution in intelligence.
