1952: USAF RB-29 Shot Down

7 October 1952: USAF RB-29, nicknamed "Sunbonnet," was on a routine flight and was shot down by Soviet fighters off the east coast of Japan’s northernmost island Hokkaido, near the tip of the Kurile Island chain. Eight crewmen were lost.
