Mr. John Jackson Platter, retired Deputy Director for Operations at NSA, died of cancer on 31 March 2001 at the age of 69. Mr. Platter retired from the NSA in 1987 after 32 years of federal service that included four years in the Air Force as a young man. His NSA career included duty in Japan, the Philippines, Cyprus, Thailand, Korea and Germany, in addition to jobs in the United States.
A resident of Columbia, he was born in Texas County, Mo. He graduated from the University of Maryland.
Survivors include his wife, Laura of Columbia; three sons, Robert of Columbia, Bruce of Dunn Loring and David of New York; two brothers; and two sisters.

From CIVOP to Field Chief positions to Deputy Director of Operations, John Platter was a model of integrity, a complete SIGINT professional and patriot.
