The NCF remembers long-standing Foundation member Edward D. Hoy. His obituary is provided below.
Edward D. Hoy, of Catonsville, MD, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, in Baltimore at age 91. He was born on August 26, 1932, to the late Harry F. and Alice M. (Lefort) Hoy in Plymouth Meeting, PA. He married Marie (McGrath) Hoy in 1957; they would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
Ed enjoyed talking about his time as a fullback playing varsity football during his senior year at St. Matthew’s High School, Conshohocken, PA, where he was nicknamed “Pepperpot.” After graduating with a B.S. in Economics from Villanova University in 1954, Ed went to work for the National Security Agency, first in Arlington, VA, and then at Fort Meade, MD, until he retired in 1987. He also served in the US Army from 1955 to 1957.
After moving to Howard County in 1963, Ed was a long-time parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ellicott City, MD, where, as a volunteer, he devoted many hours to supporting the parish pastor and serving as an usher. For his devotion, he received the Baltimore Archdiocese Medal of Honor in 1998. After moving to Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, MD, he continued to serve as an usher at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Chapel.
In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by his son Dennis (Nancy) Hoy of Martinsville, VA, and daughter Cathy (Brian) Donchez of Ellicott City, MD; grandchildren Colleen Hoy of Nashville, TN, and Chevy Chase, MD, and James Hoy of Seattle, WA; and sister Catherine Haack, of Collegeville, PA. He was preceded in death by grandson Kevin Donchez; brothers Francis, Joseph, Lawrence, and Robert, and sisters Alice, Regina, Agnes, Rose, and Theresa.
A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Chapel, 711 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD on Saturday, June 1, 2024. Visitation will begin at 10 am in the church followed by Mass at 11 am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ed’s name to the Benevolent Care Fund at Charlestown Retirement Community (https://ccicharlestown.org/giving/memorial-gifts/).
