William F. Stevenson Jr.
The NCF remembers our long-time member Mr. Bill Stevenson who passed away in June 2025. His obituary is provided below.
William Francis Stevenson, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 6, 2025. “Bill” was born in Statesville, NC on August 27, 1940, to Francis and Helice Stevenson. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in sociology from Lenoir Rhyne University in 1962 where he met his wife of 62 years, Betty Ann (nee Hackmann) Stevenson. Bill was later recognized by the university with the Clarence L. Pugh Distinguished Alumnus Award. He was also a successful graduate of the Harvard University JFK School of Government National Security Program.
Bill and Betty Ann moved to Baltimore where the National Security Agency (NSA) employed him for 34 years, finishing his career as a member of the Senior Executive Service. Following his career at NSA, he worked for 20 years in the private sector as an intelligence consultant. Additionally in his retirement, he volunteered as a museum guide at the National Cryptologic Museum for many years. He was a member of the Phoenix Society and the National Cryptologic Foundation.
Bill was a kind and joyful person, making new friends wherever he went. He never forgot a name or face and was fondly referred to as “The Mayor” by his family. Family and Faith were the most important things in his life. His eyes would light up when family was in the room and he enjoyed many smiles and laughs through the joy he shared with them. He helped to instill great faith as a part of everyday family life.
His loving wife, Betty Ann, preceded Bill in death. His three children, Mary Lynn Fisher (Tim), Laurie Urland (Doug) and Chris Stevenson (Gennie) and their families including eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren survive him.
Bill was a beacon of light to all. We are so grateful to have known his kindness, generosity, humor and faith.
A service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church 701 S. Charles Street Baltimore MD 21230.
“Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” John 11: 25-26
