Sweetheart Codes
Just in time for Valentine's Day - here is an example from the National Cryptologic Museum (NCM) of sweetheart code.
Lieutenant Elwood Williams III served in the U.S. Navy in WWII. When he was sent to the Pacific Theater, he devised a code to use when writing to his family. Obviously, the censors would black out any reference to his location. To get around the censors, he used variations in his return address on his letters to his wife or to his parents so they would know approximately where he was in relation to latitude, longitude, and Pearl Harbor.
