1921: William Friedman at Office of the Chief Signal Officer
On this date in 1921 - William Friedman became the first civilian cryptanalyst with the Office of the Chief Signal Officer. Friedman was a prolific author, teacher, and practitioner of cryptology. Much of what is done today at the National Security Agency may be traced to his pioneering efforts.
