Vice Adm. J. Michael “Mike” McConnell USN (Ret)

Joining the board is Vice Adm. J. Michael (Mike) McConnell, USN (Ret), who served as Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) from 1992 to 1996. McConnell's distinguished career spans over 50 years, focused on international and foreign intelligence issues, including 29 years as a U.S. Navy intelligence officer. In 2007, he became the second U.S. Director of National Intelligence, serving under Presidents Bush and Obama.

In February 2020 the University of South Florida announced the appointment of McConnell as Executive Director of Cyber Florida. Hosted by the University of South Florida, Cyber Florida is charged by the State of Florida to promote cybersecurity education, research, and outreach.

“We are pleased to announce that the Honorable J.M. (Mike) McConnell has joined the NCMF Board of Directors through our partnership with Cyber Florida. We are excited to have him as part of our NCMF team,” NCMF President & CEO Laura Nelson said.

McConnell has received the nation’s highest award for service in the U.S. intelligence community from both Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush. He’s also been vice chairman of Booz Allen Hamilton, a management and information technology consulting firm.

McConnell holds a master’s degree in public administration from George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Furman University. He is a graduate of the National Defense University and the National Defense Intelligence College, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and has been awarded four honorary doctorate degrees – including one from USF.
