Gene served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant. He also worked at the National Security Agency as a civilian and retired from V organization in 1979 with a total of 38 years of DoD service. He received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1979.
While an NSA Staff Officer, Gene was assigned to an area responsible for the tasking and monitoring of the ACRP and the Seaborne collection programs. He was on duty during the period when the Pueblo was seized by the North Koreans. Gene was interviewed for an NSA Oral History Interview regarding the Pueblo incident. Read the transcripts online.
Gene passed away March 25, 2009 and was buried in Arlington Cemetery with full military honors.

Eugene Sheck (July 13, 1925 – March 25, 2009) died on Wednesday morning March 25, 2009 at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville Virginia. Beloved husband of the late Mary Bailey Sheck and father of the late Michael Roy Sheck, Gene is survived by his children Alice Lee, Earl Sheck, Laurie Mather, Gene Sheck and Katherine Sprague, nine grand children, five great grand children and too many close friends to count.
In honor of nearly four decades of public service, including twenty-one years with the U.S. Navy beginning in World War II and ending with his retirement as a civil servant from the National Security Agency, Gene will be buried in Arlington Cemetery. Services on August 13 in the Arlington National Cemetery chapel followed by internment with full military honors.
