Cryptologic History:

Capt Jerome P. Ledvina

1918-2006

Mr. Ledvina served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Pacific, as a boat group commander in the Amphibious Forces. In the Korean action, he served as an intelligence officer in Japan and Korea. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his services in Intelligence and Communications. He retired as a captain, U.S. Navy Reserve in 1978. After his service in Korean action, he served as an intelligence research analyst with the U.S. Defense Department and retired from his civilian position in 1973.

Jerome P. Ledvina, 88, of Zephyrhills, Fla., passed away November 28, 2006. He was a native of Wisconsin, born in Milwaukee, Wis. in 1918, the son of Judge Jerome V. Ledvina and Helen Denzin Ledvina.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia; a sister, Helen Jeanne Zuehlke of Bailey’s Harbor, Wis.; a brother, Martial H. Ledvina of Tucson, Ariz.; daughters, Joan Parr of Phoenix, Md., Marchell Anne Quales, Catherine Paul, and son, Richard Ledvina, all of Norfolk, Va. He is survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1938 and received his PhD from Catholic University of America in 1941. His teaching career at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas was interrupted by World War II and the Korean action. Mr. Ledvina served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Pacific, as a boat group commander in the Amphibious Forces, in charge of the small boats landing assault troops in the invasions at Saipan, Tinian, Pelelieu, Leyte, Luzon and Iwo Jima. In the Korean action, he served as an intelligence officer in Japan and Korea. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his services in Intelligence and Communications. He retired as a captain, U.S. Navy Reserve in 1978. After his service in Korean action, he served as an intelligence research analyst with the U.S. Defense Department and retired from his civilian position in 1973.

He lived in Virginia Beach, Va. from 1973 until moving permanently to Zephyrhills, in 1987 and residing in an Orange Blossom Ranch Condominiums. He served as treasurer of the condominium association from the time of its organization until 1984. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8154. He was a parishioner at St. Joseph’s Church in Zephyrhills.

A memorial Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Church, 5316 11th St., Zephyrhills, where he was a longtime parishioner. Burial services took place with military honors, at the gravesite in Chapel Hill Gardens, Route 301, Dade City, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Zephyrhills.

Jerome’s first wife (not mentioned in the obituary above) was Margaret Callan. They were married on September 1, 1948 in San Antonio, Texas. Margaret is the mother of Jerome’s son and three daughters (listed as survivors above). His son Richard died the following year in Norfolk, VA. He is on Findagrave. Nothing more is known about his daughters. Jerome and Margaret divorced in 1973.

Jerome married Patricia M Meisner in Pasco, Florida on 11 Apr 1997 or in Westfield, New Jersey on 28 Jun 1997. (both are recorded). She is his wife mentioned in the obituary above.
