James Pryde
Cryptologic History: Cryptologic Bytes | Trailblazers

James W. Pryde, Sr.

1926-2017

Registry Sponsor(s): Many friends and colleagues of the National Cryptologic Foundation

Mr. James Pryde, served as a radio operator with WWII’s Tuskegee Airmen and became one of the “invisible cryptologists.” In celebration of Black History Month in 2015, NBC Washington produced a three-part series “Codebreakers: The Invisible Cryptologists” and followed the life of Mr. Pryde. Mr. Pryde was inducted into the NSA/CSS Cryptologic Hall of Honor in 2006.

Mr. James W. Pryde Sr. joined the Army Air Corps and in 1944 entered aviation school. Instead of becoming a pilot, Mr. Pryde became a radio operator with WWII’s famous Tuskegee Airmen. He then joined the Armed Forces Security Agency in 1950 as a communications clerk and was assigned to the mailroom. When it was discovered he could read automatic Morse tape, he was transferred to a signals analysis section, where he became a telemetry analyst.

Mr. Pryde then spent two years on detail to the staff of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. He served as the Director of the Defense Special Missile and Astronautics (now Aerospace) Center (DEFSMAC) from 1978 to 1980. While at DEFSMAC, he became a member of the Intelligence Community’s Guided Missile Astronautic Intelligence Committee. In 1980, Mr. Pryde served as the NSA representative to the Department of Defense and in 1981 served as Assistant Deputy Director of Administration at NSA.

During his tenure, Mr. Pryde served as an advocate for NSA African-Americans. Through his efforts he helped promote a diverse workforce within NSA, and always aimed to remind the current generation of the struggles waged by their predecessors for equality. Mr. Pryde retired from NSA in 1981, but continued to serve NSA interests as a member of the National Cryptologic Museum Foundation (now NCF). He was inducted into the NSA/CSS Cryptologic Hall of Honor in 2006.

In 2015 during Black History Month, NBC honored Mr. Pryde by producing a 3-part series following his life as an “Invisible Cryptologist” and one of the Tuskegee Airmen. NSA Historian David Hatch was also interviewed for the series. See a link to the videos included below.

The NCF lost our friend and colleague Mr. Pryde in 2017. He passed away peacefully on 10 August 2017 at the age of 90. A memorial service was held in August 2017. Burial took place later at Arlington National Cemetery. Mr. Pryde was the beloved husband of Joy Branham Pryde; loving father of Bernadette Pryde Hackley, James W. Pryde Jr. (Gayle), Deirdre Pryde, Norman Pryde (April) and Linda T. Keyes, brother of Janice Davies (Lawrence) and the late Thomas Pryde. Also survived by six grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren, two nieces, other relatives and friends.
