Secure communications between Houston’s Johnson Space Center and the Space Shuttle were vital. As part of a joint effort between NASA, the Department of Defense, and NSA, the Space Shuttle Encryption System became operational with the launch of Columbia, STS-4, in 1982. Today, NASA continues to encrypt data from space flights and satellites. On the horizon there are other challenges approaching with the first optical communications systems being fielded and higher data rates than Radio Frequency systems can provide. Find out more about this data encryption system between NSA and NASA and how they keep this information secure.
