Presidents' Day

Monday, February 15, 2021

Presidents' Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, the holiday became popularly known as Presidents' Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Presidents' Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, past and present, but perhaps especially Washington and Lincoln who both had birthdays in February.

In honor of the holiday, we invite you to visit some popular links below to see information about Washington's Culper Spy Ring, the Museum's Revolutionary Secrets Exhibit, and Thomas Jefferson's involvement in cryptology - specifically - the Jefferson Cipher Device.
